General Trading
The Challenge & Strategy
From Complexity to Clarity
Representing a company that handles machinery, coffee & oilseed exports, and construction in a single literal icon results in visual chaos. Instead, we embraced abstraction. We distilled the essence of "General Trading" down to its fundamental action: The Exchange.
The Complexity
Maldonal operates across diverse sectors: Heavy Machinery, Coffee Exports, Construction, and Spices. Attempting to illustrate all these services literally creates visual chaos and lacks focus.
The Solution
Extreme Minimalism. Instead of showing "what" we sell, we show "who we are." We adopted the philosophy of "Smallest Expression," creating a timeless architectural symbol.
The Core Concept
Paving the way to a higher purpose
Drawing from the etymology of "Maldonal" (paving the way to a higher purpose), the logo is not a picture of a product, but a symbol of the pathway.
The Bridge
The overarching curve connects two points: Supply & Demand, International & Local. A symbol of transit.
The Monogram
The structural legs and negative space subtly form the letter "M", grounding the abstract shape.
The Keystone
The central circle represents the "Higher Purpose", which isthe focus point, the seed, and the foundation.
Architectural Logic
Why Curves & Circles?
A Fluidity & Strength
-
The Arch vs. The Beam
Arches distribute weight better than flat beams. It distributes weight and pressure evenly. By using an arched top, we subconsciously project stability, durability, and the strength required for the construction and heavy machinery sectors.
-
Organic Flow
Straight lines are rigid. Curves mimic nature (beans, grains) and logistics (routes), making the brand feel approachable.
B Equilibrium
-
The Fulcrum
The circle acts as a center of gravity. It balances the heavy top arch, suggesting fairness in trade.
-
The Origin
For Trading
It represents the commodity (the coffee bean, the spice seed, the machine part).
For Construction
It represents the foundation or the point of origin.
The "Higher Purpose"
Referring to the name's meaning, the circle is the "focus point", the higher purpose that the bridge is protecting and leading towards.
Color Psychology
Earth & Industry
We have selected a palette that bridges the gap between the industrial and the organic.
Deep Teal
The Industrial Anchor
This color commands respect and feels established, suitable for an import/export firm.
Sandstone Gold
The Earth Element
This warm tone represents the raw materials. It adds a premium, high-value feel to the brand.
Functional Design
Stress-testing the Minimalism
We measured this design against the four strict rules of minimalism:
01. Adaptability
Both in Observation and Application. The logo works in a vertical stack(icon above text) and Horizontal Lookup(icon besidet text). The icon acts as a visual anchor that works with both English and Amharic typography without conflict.
02. Scalability
The "Squint Test": Whether this logo is painted 10 feet tall on the side of a shipping container or shrunk down to 16 pixels for a mobile app icon or browser tab, the geometry remains clear.
The gap between the arch and the circle is calibrated. It stays visible on a shipping container or a favicon.
03. Usability
No gradients. Easy to stitch on uniforms or stamp on boxes. The shape can tessellate into a pattern.
04. Memorability
We own the "Saddle" shape. It avoids clichés like globes or hands, creating a distinct property for the brand.
The "stylized saddle/bridge" silhouette is distinct enough to be recognized instantly, even without reading the text.
Built to Last.
"This logo is not just a stamp; it is a functional piece of design architecture. It avoids the visual noise of trying to show 'everything' we do, and instead captures the 'way' we do it with structural integrity, fluid movement, and a solid foundation. It is built to last, just like the infrastructure and trade relationships Maldonal builds."
